The most beautiful viewpoint for the Matterhorn: Riffelsee!

The Matterhorn is the most famous mountain in Switzerland, and you may also know it from the Toblerone chocolate. Located on the border between Italy and Switzerland, the Matterhorn stands at 4,478 meters and is a popular tourist attraction. The mountain is regularly climbed by experienced climbers, but this is certainly not without danger. However, most people visit the Matterhorn from a distance. This is possible from the village of Zermatt but also among other places. But as far as we are concerned, the most beautiful viewpoint for the Matterhorn can be found at Riffelsee.

Zermatt

Zermatt is a charming Swiss village situated at the foot of the Matterhorn. It is a lovely village to stay in, and from here you can already get a good view of the Matterhorn. If you are traveling by car in Switzerland, it is good to know that Zermatt is a car-free area. Therefore, you can not drive there. Most people drive to Täsch, a village that is still accessible by car and then take the train to Zermatt.

There are plenty of parking spaces available in Täsch, and the train journey to Zermatt takes only 12 minutes.

Riffelsee

Another place where you can see the Matterhorn is from Lake Riffel. This mountain lake is situated at an altitude of 2,757 meters and is a cool spot offering an amazing view of the Matterhorn. The mountain lake in front creates a beautiful reflection of the mountain in the morning.

This place is not only very beautiful to visit, but it is also easy to reach. You don't have to hike far to get here.

From Zermatt, take the mountain train (or more of a tram) to Gornergrat. You can choose to get off at the final station and walk down to Riffelsee in about 40 minutes, but you can also get off earlier at the Roterboden stop. From there, it is only a 10-minute walk to the mountain lake. To do this, follow the Riffelseeroad from the station to the lake.

Once at the lake, especially in the morning, you have a fantastic view of the Matterhorn and its reflection in the lake. After a photo stop, you can continue along the path a little further. You then walk towards the Riffelberg, also maintaining a beautiful view of the Matterhorn.

A little further along the path, just past the Riffelsee, you come across a viewpoint offering a view of the Gorner Glacier. It lies just behind this lake, and you have a great view of it from here. Definitely worth a quick stop!
