As far as we are concerned, the nicest town in the south of Germany is Füssen. The town has 15,000 inhabitants and is located in the state of Bavaria, right on the border with Austria. It is a drive of over 4 hours from Frankfurt, but then you find yourself in one of the most beautiful areas of Germany.
The reason for our visit to Füssen was to see the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, which is located just under 4 kilometers from Füssen. Though we drove to Füssen without too many expectations, we were pleasantly surprised by the town and location and would gladly return.
How long to stay?
It depends a bit on the purpose of your holiday to Bavaria. We were passing through on our way to the Dolomites in Italy and stayed here for a few nights. For us, that was enough for the things we wanted to see, but you could easily stay here for 3 weeks. Especially if you enjoy hiking or cycling and like to stay in one place a bit longer.
Are you really going for the highlights of the area? Then 2 to 4 nights is sufficient.
There are several charming hotels to be found in Füssen and the surrounding area. Besides Füssen, there are other lovely villages in this region where you can also have a great stay. Consider Schwangau, for example.
What is there to do?
Neuschwanstein Castle
It might surprise you, but there is a lot of beauty in the area around Füssen. The most famous spot is, of course, Neuschwanstein Castle. A beautiful place where you can easily spend a few hours. For example, hike up and walk around the castle before going inside with a guide. You can also choose to walk a little further to the suspension bridge, where you have an amazing view of the castle.
Hohenschwangau Castle
Most people skip this castle and go straight to Neuschwanstein Castle. A real shame, if you ask us! This castle is easy to combine with Neuschwanstein Castle, as it is just a 2-minute drive away. The golden-yellow castle stands out beautifully against the surrounding green forests.
St. Coloman Church
Near Neuschwanstein Castle and also Hohenschwangau Castle, you will find a beautiful little church in the middle of a large, open meadow. Fantastic for photographers, because the green grass and the rugged mountains in the background ensure that this little church is photographed by many people.
Zugspitze and Eibsee
The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany and is located just under an hour's drive from Füssen. You can choose to take the cable car to the top for an amazing view of not one, but four countries! At the top, on a clear day, you can see Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. Very cool!
Don't feel like going uphill? Then visit the beautiful Lake Eibsee. The clear blue water with the Zugspitze mountain range in the background makes for an amazing sight, and you'll forget for a moment that you're in Germany. Swim in the blue water or take a walk around the lake. You can easily spend a whole day here!
