Switzerland is one of the most perfect countries to visit if you love rugged mountain landscapes and stunning nature. The great thing about Switzerland is that there is something for every type of adventurer. Whether you love long hikes or prefer taking the cable car to your destination, there is something for everyone!

We chose to pick a mix of both. A beautiful hike here and there, but also some easier viewpoints. We drove around Switzerland for a week, and below you will find an overview of what we consider to be the most beautiful places to see in Switzerland!

Matterhorn

The Matterhorn is, of course, one of the most famous places in Switzerland and not to be missed during your trip. The best way to visit the Matterhorn is from Zermatt. You do need to plan this carefully, however, as Zermatt is car-free. This means you have to drive to Tisch and then take the train to get there. The Matterhorn is an awesome mountain and, of course, known from the Toblerone chocolate. From Zermatt, you can go on great hikes with views of the Matterhorn, but the mountain is also clearly visible from the village itself. In winter, this is a great ski area, so Zermatt and the Matterhorn are worth visiting all year round.

Rheinfall

If you are driving from the Netherlands or Germany to Switzerland, the Rheinfall, just across the border from Germany into Switzerland, can be one of the first stops on your road trip. It is certainly worth including, as it is the largest waterfall in Europe. The waterfall is located in the river Rhine, next to the town of Schaffhausen. You can take a nice walk along the waterfall, but you can also go up the river in a small boat to view the waterfall up close.

Oeschinensee

Lake Oeschinen is one of our favorite places in the world. Imagine a lake so intensely blue that you can hardly believe the water actually looks like that. The lake can be reached via the cable car from Kandersteg, and from the terminus, it is a 30-minute walk to the lake. Once there, you can swim or walk around the lake. We chose to take the high-altitude Oeschinensee-Heuberg hike along the lake. This route is 11 kilometers long and takes about 4 hours. A cool hike with amazing views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Rhône Glacier

The Rhône Glacier is a less challenging place to visit in Switzerland, but that doesn't make it any less beautiful. The Rhône Glacier is located on the Furkaps and is the second largest glacier in Switzerland. A nice feature of this place is that you can visit the ice cave at the glacier, where you can walk through a cave made of ice at the foot of the glacier. It is very interesting to see if you haven't been in an ice cave before. The cave is located opposite to Hotel Belvédère, where you can also park your car.

Lauterbrunnen

The village of Lauterbrunnen is a fifteen-minute drive from Interlaken and is a very beautiful village to visit. In the valley where Lauterbrunnen is situated, there are more than 70 waterfalls, and from Lauterbrunnen, you have a view of several of these waterfalls. It is nice to drive through, but it is also certainly worth taking a walk through the village.

Aletsch Glacier

The Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in Switzerland and is located in the Swiss Alps. Because the glacier is so large, it can be viewed from several viewpoints, such as Moosfluh, Eggishorn, and Bettmerhorn. We viewed the glacier from the viewpoint in Moosfluh, which can be reached from Riederalp by cable car.

First Cliff Walk

On Mount First in Grindelwald, you will find the First Cliff Walk. This is a bridge along the side of a mountain situated at an impressive altitude of 2,000 meters. Super cool! From Grindelwald, first take the cable car up (stay on until the last stop), and from there, it is a few-minute walk to this bridge. The bridge is only a few hundred meters long, so the walk won't take very long, but it combines well with Bachalpsee, which is described below.

Bachalpsee

After taking the cable car from Grindelwald to First and conquering the First Cliff Walk, you can continue from here to Lake Bachalp. Follow Route 1 for this. The walk to this lake takes about an hour, is easy to navigate, and is therefore a nice spot to include if you have already arrived at First. When we were there, we had a good day (25 degrees) with a great view of the mountain peaks behind the lake, which made a perfect spot for a picnic.

Rosenlaui

The last item on our list is the Rosenlaui Valley. This is a beautiful area where there might not be a whole lot to do, but the landscape is once again stunning. There are several hiking trails to be found here, but you can also drive leisurely through the area and stop for a shorter walk or a photo opportunity.
