7x What to do in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia and a nice place to unwind for a few days after a long flight. We came straight from Singapore ourselves and hadn't expected to like KL so much! We stayed in Kuala Lumpur for a week in total but, we also went to Taman Negara for a few nights in between.

Kuala Lumpur is a large city with over 2 million inhabitants of various nationalities. You will find different types of neighborhoods here, and there is plenty to do. Below are our favorite places in the city.

Rooftop swimming pool

Just like in Singapore or other major cities, there are many high-rise buildings to be found in Kuala Lumpur, which means there are also many rooftop pools with cool views of the city skyline.

Since we were also going to Taman Negara for a few nights in between, we decided to rent a small apartment in Kuala Lumpur in an apartment complex with a large rooftop pool overlooking the famous Patronas Twin Towers.

Of course, there are more than enough hotels with cool rooftop pools, but the convenience of an apartment with a washing machine and kitchen suited us very well this time. Especially when it turned out that we were allowed to use this pool.

Patronas Twin Towers and KLCC Park

The most famous towers in Kuala Lumpur are the Patronas Twin Towers. Both towers are 452 meters tall and were once the tallest buildings in the world (the Burj Khalifa in Dubai currently holds the title of the world's tallest tower). Both towers are connected by a skybridge that you can visit. The towers are used as offices for, among others, the oil company Petronas, and at the foot of the towers you will find the largest shopping mall in Malaysia.

As a tourist, you can visit the skybridge on the 41st and 42nd floors, along with the observation deck on the 86th floor. You can purchase tickets for this online.

The towers are located in KLCC Park, where you have beautiful views of the towers from several spots, but can also enjoy a lovely walk.

Kuala Lumpur Tower

The Kuala Lumpur Tower is another well-known tower in KL and is also known as the Menara Tower. It is one of the tallest communications towers in the world, but is slightly smaller than the Patrons Twin Towers. The tower is 421 meters tall and just as nice to visit.

At the very top of the tower, you will find an observation deck for which you can purchase tickets, but there is also a restaurant, a sky terrace, and our favorite: a glass box from which you have an incredibly cool view of the surroundings.

Batu Caves

The Batu Caves are located just under 15 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur. They are easily accessible by taxi or Grab and are a very nice attraction. The Batu Caves consist of Hindu temples built in and around a 400-million-year-old cave. The largest cave is over 325 meters high and very impressive to see.

In front of the entrance stands a 43-meter-high golden statue of Lord Murugan, which looks impressive even from afar. Next to the golden statue is a large staircase of 272 steps that leads you to the cave. Unfortunately, when we were there, the stairs were still grey, but a month after our visit, they painted all the steps a bright color, which makes the place even more impressive and beautiful.

Once you reach the top, you can enter the cave, where you will find several small temples (but also a whole lot of macaques).

Thean Hou Temple

Although we really enjoyed visiting the Batu Caves, Thean Hou Temple is our favorite in Kuala Lumpur. The temple is located in Chinatown and is one of the most important Chinese temples in Kuala Lumpur.

The temple stands in the middle of the city, and from the temple, you have a view of the Kuala Lumpur Tower. The red temple is beautiful to visit, and the square with hundreds of lanterns is certainly worth a visit.

KL Eco Forest Park

In addition to KLCC Park, you can also enjoy a lovely walk in KL Eco Forest Park. This park is located next to the Kuala Lumpur Tower, so they are easy to combine. The park is open every day, but you do need to pay an entrance fee of approximately €8 per person.

Although the park is not very large, you can encounter quite a few wild animals here, such as various types of monkeys and many birds. Another nice feature of this park is that there is a canopy walk you can walk along. A canopy walk is a walking path that often consists of suspension bridges and platforms high in the trees. Canopy walks are very popular in Malaysia, and the largest canopy walk can be found in the jungle in Taman Negara.

Sultan Abdul Samad building

One of the most famous buildings in Kuala Lumpur is the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, which is built entirely in the Moorish style. The building was constructed in 1897 and was used by the British as a government building at that time. Today, the building is still very beautiful to visit and also easy to reach due to its central location in the city.
