Canggu is one of the most popular destinations in Bali and a fantastic place to start or end your trip. Located just a short drive from the airport, this vibrant beach town combines surf culture, trendy cafés, beach clubs and nightlife with easy access to some of Bali's most famous attractions.
Whether you're looking to relax by the beach, learn how to surf or enjoy Bali's food scene, there's plenty to keep you busy.
Here are our favourite things to do in Canggu.
Visit Tanah Lot Temple
One of Bali's most iconic landmarks is Tanah Lot, located around 20 minutes from Canggu.
The temple sits dramatically on a rock formation just offshore, creating one of the island's most famous views. During high tide, the temple appears almost completely surrounded by water.
Sunset is by far the best time to visit, when the golden light creates a spectacular backdrop for photographs.
Around the temple complex you'll find local shops, cafés and restaurants where you can relax before or after exploring the area.
Relax at a beach club
Canggu is famous for its beach clubs, making it one of the best places in Bali to spend a relaxing day by the ocean. Most beach clubs offer sun loungers, swimming pools, restaurants and bars, live DJs and music events en direct beach acces. Popular beach clubs are La Brisa and Finns.
During the day they're perfect for relaxing, while in the evening many transform into lively sunset and nightlife venues.
Learn to surf
Canggu is one of Bali's most popular surfing destinations. The area offers waves suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers, which is why travellers from all over the world visit specifically for surf holidays.Several surf schools operate throughout Canggu and nearby beaches, making it easy to book lessons or rent equipment.
Even if you've never surfed before, Canggu is one of the best places in Bali to learn.
Go souvenir shopping
If you're looking for souvenirs, local crafts or unique gifts, head to Love Anchor Market.
This popular market feels like a modern Balinese bazaar and offers everything from handmade jewellery and artwork to clothing, home décor and accessories. It's a fun place to spend an hour browsing and picking up gifts to take home.
Explore Canggu's Food Scene
For food lovers, Canggu is arguably one of the best destinations in Bali.
The town is packed with stylish cafés, brunch spots, cocktail bars and international restaurants. Whether you're looking for traditional Indonesian food, vegan dishes or fine dining experiences, you'll find it here.
Some of our personal favourites include:
Crate Café: A popular breakfast and brunch spot known for generous portions and excellent coffee.
WOODS: A fantastic dinner option with live music and a lively atmosphere.
Azoria: One of our favourite places for Italian food and fresh pasta in Canggu.
One of the best things about Canggu is that new restaurants and cafés seem to open constantly, so there's always something new to discover.
Take a day trip from Canggu
Although many travellers stay in Canggu for the beaches and lifestyle, its location also makes it a convenient base for exploring other parts of Bali. Such as visiting waterfalls near Ubud, exploring Bali's rice terraces of discovering traditional temples.
Because Ubud is only about an hour away, it's easy to combine cultural sightseeing with a beach-based stay in Canggu.
How many days do you need in Canggu?
Many expats and long-term travellers choose to live in Canggu thanks to its relaxed lifestyle, excellent restaurants and modern facilities.
For most visitors, however, 3 to 5 days is the perfect amount of time.
This gives you enough time to explore the beaches, visit tanah lot, take a surf lesson and enjoy the café scene.
If you're travelling around Bali, Canggu works particularly well as either your first or final stop.
Best Time to Visit Canggu
Like the rest of Bali, Canggu has two main seasons. Dry season from May till September with sunny weather and ideal beach conditions but also higher prices and more visitors. And there is wet season from October till April with short tropical showers but also fewer tourists.
While the dry season is generally considered the best time to visit, Canggu remains an attractive destination throughout the year.
