Wine tasting is something you simply can't miss when visiting South Africa. Although you'll find excellent wine all over the country—and a bottle of wine with dinner often costs no more than €6 to €10—nothing compares to visiting a real wine estate for a tasting.
Within just 30 to 60 minutes from Cape Town, you'll find countless wine estates in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl. Picture endless vineyards surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. Whether you're planning a day trip or looking for a relaxing getaway for a few nights, the Cape Winelands are the perfect destination.

The best wine estates in Stellenbosch and the Cape Winelands
There are two great ways to explore the wine region: drive yourself to the estates or hop aboard the famous Wine Tram.
The Franschhoek Wine Tram is a fantastic way to visit several wine estates in one day. You can choose which estates to get off at and enjoy a wine tasting before continuing your journey. There are multiple routes available, combining both tram and bus rides, each visiting different estates. The routes start and end at Franschhoek Station, with connections to wine estates in Franschhoek, Paarl, and Stellenbosch. For more information about the routes and timetables, click here!
If you decide to visit the wine estates by car, I highly recommend booking your wine tasting or lunch in advance. Especially during the high season, the most popular estates fill up quickly.

Tokara Wine Estate – Wine tasting with incredible views
Tokara is one of the most popular wine estates in Stellenbosch, known for its stunning views and excellent wines. Because of its popularity, it's also one of the more expensive options, but the setting alone makes it worth considering.
Delaire Graff Estate – A luxury wine tasting experience
Located directly opposite Tokara, Delaire Graff is easy to combine with a visit to Tokara. This luxurious estate offers exceptional wines, beautiful gardens, and an outstanding restaurant that's perfect for dinner.
Spier Wine Farm – Perfect for a relaxed afternoon
Spier may already sound familiar, as its wines are sold in many countries. Located closer to Cape Town, it's a favourite among both locals and visitors. The relaxed atmosphere makes it an ideal place to spend an afternoon.
Blaauwklippen – A cozy wine estate
Blaauwklippen has a welcoming atmosphere and even hosts a market every Sunday. One of the highlights is that you can pair your wine tasting with a selection of sweet treats and other delicious snacks.
Cavalli Estate – More than just wine
Cavalli combines award-winning wines with beautiful horses and elegant architecture. The restaurant is slightly more expensive than most, but the terrace overlooking the lake offers spectacular views that easily make up for it.
Vrede en Lust – Our favourite wine estate
During our first trip to South Africa, we tried a wine from Vrede en Lust in a restaurant and immediately knew we wanted to visit the estate one day. On our second trip, we stayed here for three nights—and of course, sampled plenty of their wines.
Should you stay overnight at a wine estate?
That really depends on the kind of trip you're looking for. During our second visit to Cape Town, we wanted to slow down and spend a few relaxing days surrounded by vineyards. We chose Vrede en Lust, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip.
The estate offers breathtaking views, a lovely bistro, and an excellent restaurant. Our stay included a complimentary wine tasting, but over the course of a few days we ended up trying nearly every wine on the menu anyway.
A standard tasting costs around €6 and includes five or six wines, along with plenty of information about the wines and the estate itself. Vrede en Lust is also one of the stops on the Franschhoek Wine Tram.
If you don't plan on visiting several wine estates, staying overnight at one estate is by far the most relaxing option. Besides wine tasting, you can enjoy walks through the vineyards, relax by the pool, have long lunches, and end the day with a great dinner.
If you'd rather explore multiple estates, I'd recommend staying in either Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. Both towns are centrally located, making it easy to get around by Wine Tram, Uber, or car. Just remember: don't drink and drive.
How to get to Stellenbosch from Cape Town
Getting to Stellenbosch from Cape Town is easy by car. The drive usually takes between 30 minutes and one hour, depending on which wine estate you're visiting. All wine estates have ample parking, and if you're taking the Franschhoek Wine Tram, there's plenty of parking available near the station as well.
How many wine estates can you visit in one day?
If you're taking the Wine Tram, it's easy to visit four to six wine estates in a single day. Keep in mind that it makes for a busy itinerary, as you'll be hopping on and off trams and buses throughout the day.
If you prefer a more relaxed experience, consider spending the entire day at one wine estate. Many estates offer different tasting menus, so you could enjoy a white wine tasting in the afternoon followed by a red wine tasting later in the day. Another great option is to visit two neighbouring estates at a slower pace.
Is wine tasting in Stellenbosch expensive?
Not at all. Compared to wine regions in Europe or the United States, wine tasting in Stellenbosch is remarkably affordable.
A tasting of five or six wines usually costs between €6 and €10 per person. Most estates also offer optional food pairings or small bites for just a few extra euros, making it excellent value for money.
